Resistance Of The Spirit a talk by Martyn Bell

digé par Alain dans la rubrique Évènement

At the University of Chichester (Sussex) on November 7th there will be a talk and film screening presented during the evening by Martyn Bell, about the wartime events in and near Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in France.

German troops were billeted in this small Protestant town and yet its resourceful and courageous inhabitants provided safe houses for more than a thousand children and young people, mainly Jewish, and thus saved them from the dreadful fate which befell so many during the Holocaust.

Virginia Hall (formerly with SOE but later the OSS) and also Jedburgh team 'Jeremy' (led by Geoffrey Hallowes) were operating close to Le Chambon during 1944, and their activities will also be covered in Martyn's talk.

Martyn Bell along with Martyn Cox first visited the town in 2011, to film an oral history interview with a veteran of the local Maquis whose group had worked with Hall and Hallowes. They were so taken by what has since been described as Le Chambon's "conspiracy of goodness" that they also shot enough material with a local historian to make a short film about the hidden children, and this will be shown on November 7th.
