7 December 2012, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Operation Frankton, the first stone of a new monument was laid at La Pointe du Chay near Royan close to the spot where Sergeant Wallace and Marine Ewart, two of the ten Commandos, had been imprisoned after their kayak had sunk and they had been captured by the Germans as they swam to the shore.
The monument in their honour is currently under construction and the inauguration is planned for the end of spring 2013.
