The following is one of my favourite stories from the book La Brigade RAC. The story is told by Guy Lapeyronnie "Lapeup" at the time of the Liberation of Nontron (one of the first towns in the Dordogne to be liberated) on the 10th june 1944.

On the 22nd of june 1944 a german convoy coming up from Perigueux sent ahead a reconnaisance mission towards Vergt which came accross a car abandoned by some maquisards. They immediately started to hunt down anyone in the surrounding woods and fell upon some isolated members of the Groupe Mercedes (A.S. Dordogne-Centre) and shot dead the five maquisards that they found.

This is an original photo taken by an american reporter. It was taken on Bastille Day in 1942 as 100,000 people took to the streets in Lyon to protest against the Vichy government and Nazi occupation. Shown here are the notes dated 9-7-42 that are on the back of the photo

I acquired this ring last year, described as 2nd world war but apparently it dates from the 1st world war. Made in the trenches by a french soldier un 'poilu' and fabricated from a remnant of a german shell and fashioned round the end of a rifle. Lovely piece!
