WW1 ‘trench art’ ring

I acquired this ring last year, described as 2nd world war but apparently it dates from the 1st world war. Made in the trenches by a french soldier un 'poilu' and fabricated from a remnant of a german shell and fashioned round the end of a rifle. Lovely piece!

Fusillés de la Braconne en Charente

On the morning of the 5th of may 1943, in a clearing in the forest of La Braconne to the east of Angouleme six résistants were shot by SS Soldiers. The six were Jean Barriere, Paul Bernard, Jean Gallois, Rene Michel, Marc and Marcel Nepoux and were amongst 50 local people arrested at the end of November 1942 for being involved in 'activities' against the Germans.

Bob Maloubier aka Robert Mortier was born in 1923 in Paris and was just 17 when the Germans invaded France. He had spent part of his childhood in the U.S. where his father had been a Professor at the Columbia University in New York.

Raoul Audrerie "Le Crapaud"

On the 29th of may 1940 during combat against the germans Raoul was shot and a bullet was lodged in his right lung and he was taken to Germany as a prisoner of war. In the beginning of 1941 he was released on the grounds of ill health and returned to Payzac where his family lived. The bullet was never extracted and he would say that it was like a barometer that would tell him of any change in the weather.
